Elai-Alai dance and music group (Portugalete, Spain)

Elai-Alai dance and music group was created in 1962 as a result of a public initiative and following a secular vocation in their town. From then on, the personality and renown of the group has built up within and outside the Basque Country's boundaries. This has been due to a subtle but constant task of retrieval, preservation and development of the country's very prolific Basque folklore.

The group has been invited to numerous international festivals and a variety of events, always accomplishing a roaring audience and press success, as well as important recognitions, such as the Salm Crown in Senones (France) and the First Award in the International Folklore Contest in Gorizia, Italy.

The group has also represented the Basque Country in Belgium, Bulgaria, Check Republic, England, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sardinia, Switzerland and other countries.

The group has produced many choreographies and shows and its repertoire includes dances from different regions in the Basque Country.

Elai-Alai's mission is focused on re-education on the country’s roots and national identity, "Day by day our society pushes us into a purely lucrative culture, which does not take into account the things that make us be ourselves, the things that identify us as we are and as we will be in the future."

Elai-Alai dance and music group is part of the traditional culture centre, which aims to accomplish the instruction of individuals and the development and disclosure of traditional culture, contributing towards the promotion and progress of Spanish culture.
